An English translation by the author can be found below.

Eigentlich scheint mir also alles gesagt.

Du bist mir so wichtig."

English version

Attracted

I am sitting on a bench on a hill with Anna, enjoying the colorful sunset in the distance. They put their hand on my knee and gently squeezes - as they often do to show me they are feeling something - and that that something wants out. But I sense that something is different, as if they wanted to make a point by doing that - as if they wanted to get up and leave.

"Hey, Mono", Anna says - hesiting - and with a face that I can only read as "this one will hurt." "I have to tell you something. It's kind of hard to bring myself to saying this ... but ... well ... we've done so many nice things, and I really enjoyed doing them with you. I like you." ... They look at me, face heavy, but with a warmth that washes over me. To Anna, every being is important, no matter how small - but they especially care for the ones close to their heart.

"But ...", they continue, "But ... I ... I mean ... I thought about it ... about us ... and I don't think we're going to work out".

"Mau?", I ask them. I think I know what they are getting at and tentatively poke at the subject: "Do you mean ... romantically?"

They nod and say, "I did some soul searching ... and ... I don't feel for you that way. I really, really want you in my life, though ... as a friend .. or - no - as ... I don't know ... as whatever we are now. I was hoping I'd feel that way by now, and I feel you want me to - and I really, really like you. I'd thought I'd tell you because it feels like the right thing to do.

I nod and say: "Thanks, that's really kind of you".

We have watched some movies together, had a few coffee dates. We hugged a lot; sometimes we cuddled - on a bench with a view as well, like we are now. We did some day trips. I visited Anna at work - they drive tram trains - and I really enjoyed listening to them talk about it. I showed them how to build a shortwave antenna, and we tried it out, talking to half the world. We cooked together and for each other, listened to our favorite songs together and sang a few of them, too.

When they picked me up at the station for the first time, we stood hand in hand, overwhelmed, looking into each other's eyes and bursting into joyful laughter, jumping around - lost in our little moment.

And when they dropped me off at the station, we stood there, knowing that - should we start a hug - the train would leave without me. The same when I dropped them off at our station.

We did walkies with Haru and Bekka - my two dogs. We played with them in the tall grass and had puppy cuddles while watching the clouds. We went to the vet with Bekka together when she licked her paw too much and it was sore and talked while waiting with the other dogs.

We grew fond of each other, having late-night calls until the sun came up, the batteries ran empty, or all our data was used up. We talked about heartaches and silly moments, laughed about it, and showed up for each other when things got rough. We fell asleep next to one another and woke up arm in arm - at first by accident, then - because it felt right for us - fell asleep in each other's arms.

And now I am quite unsure what to say to them. Nothing about what we did and who we were for each other felt romantic. Very deep and emotional and close ... and so, so right - but not at all romantic. Neither did the situations feel romantic nor did I feel like we were heading there. So ... thinking about it, I arrive at the conclusion that everything is - or should be - clear. Neither Anna nor I wants a romantic relationship. And more importantly: we enjoy the heck out of what we are - and what we've been through.

What makes me sad though is what Anna said in passing: that they hoped those feelings would come if I'd wanted them. And I keep asking myself what that means for us - and if they somehow need these feelings from me for us to be able to continue with being what we are.

They look at me with a mix of inquisitiveness and encouragement but read the confusion from my face.

"I don't know what to say..." I begin, and I see a frown form on their face. "No, no! Not like that. Everything's fine - I am actually quite relieved that you said that.", I say quickly. And now they seem truly baffled.

“I am sorry I didn’t talk to you about this earlier,” I begin, “but I don’t have romantic feelings for you either.” I really can’t read Anna's face, but they seem slightly surprised, so I wait a second.

“I ... I thought ... all the dates.”, they say. They put a finger on their lips and gaze into the pinkish-blue sky and the leaves in between us and the infinity of it.

“Wait a minute…” they suddenly say. “This whole time I thought you were waiting for me to 'finally fall in love with you' so we can ... proceed - take the next step, so to speak. And after a short pause they laugh out loud: “Proceed ... with what?! Which next steps was I thinking about exactly?”

“We’re in the center of the community and still struggle to break the habits of our conditioning”, I say, and they add: “Or get off the proverbial escalator. Just one destination - forgetting that we’re already there.”

"Exactly," I say.

“Yeah... but what is this then?” Anna says, “A date?”

"Why not?" I answer, and they nod: “Why the heck not? I wonder why I even wanted to ask.”

“May I take your hand?” I ask them and nod towards their hand that still rests - slightly less tense now - on my leg. They nod, so I take their hand with both of mine. It seems too warm for that, but I can’t make eye contact anymore - no spoons left - and I’d probably laugh my butt off. But holding their hand feels good and close and sweet, and it probably says more than my words ever could.

“I really, really like you a lot, Anna, and I am as excited as a little kid when I spend time with you. I want you in my life, and I want to make room for you there. I wish to make sure we can feel safe with each other, no matter what we would like to share with one another - good news or uncomfortable things.”

Anna looks at me, head tilted, lips pressed together and smirking, as if I were a Valentine's greeting card and they had just read the cheesy platitudes on my front.

“Mono, really, maw ...” they say. “You ... I feel the same. And I want you to be able to info dump with me, and I want to do that, too. And that we can be silent together, grow apart, and find each other again. You are so significant to me.”

A moment later, they ask for their hand back just to take mine: “I am so, so sorry,” they begin, and I want to interject, but they continue, “No, please, let me finish. I am sorry that I assumed to know what you wanted - without asking. I nearly destroyed something beautiful because I thought there was a problem... because... well... I grew up like that.”

I squeeze their hand - three times - to let them know that I am alright, that everything is ok. “Yes. Me, too. I understand; it’s ok. Nothing bad happened,” I say.

But then I can't stop myself from going on: "You know, I am stuck on these rails so often as well. All these preconceptions and images we have in our minds, like, about what's 'normal' between people - and assuming that it's always the same for everyone. And that we all have the same goals."

"Yes", Anna says, "and then we stop considering what all of our emotions actually mean FOR US, but how to fit it into societies' structures ... or how others might perceive us."

"Exactly.", I reply again.

Anna smiles happily, gets up, and pulls my arm, suggesting I should join her. They look deeply into my eyes. And I can't stop myself from laughing, and they are struggling too. Hand in hand, in front of each other, they say:

"May I start over?" - I nod, and they continue: "Mono, I have to tell you something brilliant: I have no romantic intentions with you. I want you in my life, just like before and very close."

And we giggle and do little jumps ... unable to contain the happiness in the sunset.

A‑Romantik, A‑Platonik, A‑Sexualität, A‑Sensualität – das sind nur einige der A‑Spektren.

Mir fehlt – bezogen auf meine A*spec-Identitäten – nichts.

Teilen, was in meinem Tag passiert ist

Willkommen in meiner Friend-zone.
